Why is prostitution illegal in Nigeria but Ashawo (prostitution) business is booming?

  • 0

Nigeria is one of the countries with legalization against prostitution, but it is quite surprising that in almost all states in the country, ashawo business, as it is fondly called, is such a big and flourishing business.

Although prostitution might not be legalized in nigeria but Nigerian Constitution does not criminalise sex work. Religion plays a major role in the life of the average Nigerian and many would likely cite it as a reason why commercial sex work should not be formalised and regulated. Even with the laws and bad stereotypes, prostitution is a thriving business in the most populous black nation in the world.

Prostitution, just like drugs, is a very big business irrespective of where it is practiced. I like to see it as an industry of its own, a business that has millions of workers, that’s an industry. Prostitution business is thriving and continuing to grow even harder through the use of the Internet for marketing to new clients and avoiding detection by law enforcement. The anonymity provided by new technologies and websites is easily exploited by the sex trade.
