I’ve come across few articles online where Nigeria, as a country, was described ‘failed’. What makes Nigeria a failed country?

  1. I am a Nigerian-American but never been to Nigeria, I honestly don’t know what to write here because everything about Nigeria has failed. Talk about roads, electricity, water, education, housing, security, government, food, jobs, currency, police system, stability, transportation, corruption, etc just to mention a few. Any country that has failed in at least 5 of the list above is close to being a failed state but Nigeria has failed in all. Nigeria is a failed state, a woefully failed state. When a duly democratic elected president is not able to provide adequate security for his citizens, and citizens are not be able to afford three square meals, enjoy good electricity, then Nigeria is a failed state.

  2. Nigeria is struggling, yes inflation has become part and parcel of Nigeria’s Economy, yes corruption has only known elevation, yes education is losing its value fast, yes insecurity is rife in every nooks and cranny of the country, yes health care system has been failing etcetera, but all this doesn’t make Nigeria a failed state. Failure is not an identity but an action. In case you’re wondering what the difference is, one is permanent and the other is not. Failure shouldn’t define anybody or place because failure is a problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from. Nigeria may be encountering a series of failures, but that doesn’t make it a failed state because it still possesses the potential of transcending those failures. Calling Nigeria a failed state is a pessimistic conclusion.
