It is believed that if you want a million bucks, you will definitely do something that is worth a million bucks. This has turned to a general mentality, every act of kindness has an underlining condition.

This is a very common mentality that has eaten deep into every spheres of life, and irrespective of the person, position, each person exhibit that mentality in one way or the other. Personally, I see this as a way of maintaining a check on goodwill. See, people misuse opportunities and people often abuse goodwill from others. However, if I’ll be doing you a favour, you must’ve done something for me or will do something in the future to commensurate the act of kindness I’m doing to you— either ways, I’m doing you the Favour because I will definitely get something back. Some people became this way because their act of kindness was abused by the people they’ve shown kindness in the past. Nothing goes for nothing indeed, it’s always something for something.
This is an old narrative that has come to stay, to get a Favour from someone, you must be willing to do something in return. And depending on your gender and the situation— it might be in kind or cash or even some act of service to the person rendering the Favour. Yes in cash, you may be wondering why someone who is capable of helping you would want to collect your money. Everyone needs money, no one ever stops needing money. There are some contracts you simply cannot get on your own, you need some individuals to pull some strings for you, these individuals won’t pull the strings for nothing. “You have to oil their palms”. Nothing goes for nothing, no one is entitled to anything. No one is worth anything. You’re simply working for the kindness you’re getting one way or the other. But definitely, you’re giving something in return.
