What is it with movie producers using clear adults to play the role of teenagers in movies. They look overly grown and matured for the role they’re playing.

There are many laws that protect children working in the industry, and rightfully so. It’s also a bit cheaper to hire adult actors in the long run. If you have two actors auditioning for a high school student, one being 15 and one 18, both equally as talented and had the young look we need, I’m most likely going to pick the 18yo. I don’t need to worry about permits, school tutors, or dealing with parents who try to be managers. This would be the case for any lead cast members. When it comes to co-stars, then it’s easier to bring in younger actors because less time is needed from them on set.
There are rules for working with child actors in movies and TV shows. Children aren’t allowed to work as many hours as adults. If the shoot is going to be long, the production has to provide for the education of the children while they’re working. There may be certain safety restrictions about what sorts of scenes they can and can’t shoot. All of that hassle goes away if you just hire a young-looking 18–20 year old.
