  • 0

I am always left in awe when I see people in unhappy relationships refuse to leave such relationship. Is there a reason to why they cannot leave?

Unhappy relationships don’t start out bad, they start out wonderful. It’s a part of the cycle of abuse. Many abusers use isolation, such as cutting people off from their friends, and family; then they use monetary isolation making it impossible for them to leave financially. Then we have the threats of violence, to selves, spouses and children. There are many reasons, and it is never just as easy as leaving. People tend to become comfortable with routine, even if the routine is horrible and destructive. If you know you’re going to come home and have an argument every day, eventually that becomes your comfort zone. People will stay within their comfort zone because change is unknowable. The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.

Well, without judging, there are so many reasons; such as being afraid of being alone. Because they think it might get better. Because they remember how things were before it was bad and they hope it’ll be that way again. Because they put the other person on a pedestal and have their self-worth wrapped up in what the other person thinks of them. Weakness, low self-esteem, watching too many love stories, not listening to your gut instinct, even though it’s screaming at you. Also, some people have punched above their weight in obtaining their partner, the other person knows it, and acts on it. That’s another dynamic worth investigating. People hope it gets better. That the other person will wake up one day and realise they’ve treated the other badly. They hope for a realisation.
