When someone is depressed, something is stopping them from enjoying life and contact with people. They likely do not know what it is or don’t know how to fix it. If you’re dealing with someone who is depressed, do not try to give them optimism, show them the good things in life, or fix their problems. This will only make them shy away and seclude themselves further. They will at worst see you as a blind idiot, and at best feel worse because they cannot see from your perspective. The remedy is, in my experience, to let them tell you all their problems and concerns to you confidentially. Be a listener. If they are confused about something, try to show them the multiple options availible, and present it in a logical way you both can understand. I hope all goes well!
The first reason is perhaps they don’t want to bring others that they love down to their level of depression. Another reason could be simply, if a person has depression, they aren’t well, if a person isn’t feeling well, or sick they tend not to make good or the best decisions.
