Why are cats scared of cucumbers?

  • 1
  • 1

I love cats a lot, I can’t remember a period of my life when I didn’t own at least a single cat. So I know very well that cats are scared of cucumbers, for me, I think it’s due to the shape of a cucumber.

The only reason people say cats are scared of cucumbers is because they think cats think it looks like snake. Why exactly? I say that’s bullshit. For one thing, cats know the difference between a snake and a cucumber. They know the cucumber is not a snake even if they don’t know what it is. Cats are much smarter than you want to give them credit for if you think that. Plus, they know the cucumber is something that they don’t want to eat. A snake would be something they would want to eat possibly. With the exception of the large constrictors, most snakes are prey to cats. Forget the cat and cucumber videos on YouTube, check out the cats vs Snakes videos. Cats kick snakes asses every day of the week. I’ve kept snakes as pets in the past, pythons and king snakes, and I’ve always had to keep my cats away from them. If any of them ever escaped, they were dead. Every cat I’ve ever had attacked snakes on sight when given the opportunity and they were not unique in that way.

Actually, it isn’t really the cucumber they are frightened of. You know what else is long, dark and alive? Snakes. And even though your cat may never have seen a snake, its ancestors did, and they evolved neural mechanisms to deal with an encounter with them. And that simple mechanism is to be startled and have a rush of adrenaline. We all have a rough idea of what is around us. Without looking, think about what is behind you right now. You have mental map of an expected layout. Furniture, clothes, ornaments, gadgets, toys, perhaps a friend, partner or relative. But if you suddenly turned around and saw something that looked vaguely like a large spider where you weren’t expecting it, it might give you quite a fright. On closer inspection, of course it’s not a spider, of course it’s fake, but in that instant where your guard was down, when the complex analytical brain was relaxed, the ancient animal instincts kicked in. Same is true for cats.
