The brain is supposed to recognize good from bad. Good things to eat, for instance, should be remembered and appreciated, bad things that poison you or give you tommy ache should be avoided. So the brain is wired to go back to good and get addicted to it. Addiction is part of a protection that nature builds for us in our brain. Addiction is not only to substances, it can be to activities. We are wired for pleasure. Now the brain is not smart by itself and it makes mistakes: one can get addicted to bad stuff ranging from bad drugs to gambling, to crime.
Addiction is a compulsive seeking, and then obtaining, of a substance while behavior increasingly becomes out of control. A condition that results when a person ingests a substance or engages in an activity that can be pleasurable. The continued use of, which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work or relationships, even health. Addiction is a primary, chronic disease involving brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry; it can lead to relapse, progressive development, and the potential for fatality if not treated. It is characterized by a tolerance compulsion for and obsession about the drug.
