Treatment of kidney stones depends on the type of stone and how bad it is. You can simply wait for the stone to pass by itself- Often you can simply wait for the stone to pass. Smaller stones are more likely than larger stones to pass on their own. Waiting four to six weeks for the stone to pass is safe as long as the pain is bearable, there are no signs of infection, the kidney is not completely blocked and the stone is small enough that it is likely to pass. While waiting for the stone to pass, you should drink normal amounts of water. You may need pain medication when there is discomfort.
It’s not possible to completely eliminate the risk of kidney stones. Some people are most susceptible to getting them than others. But, there are a few dietary changes that you can make to reduce your risk. Firstly, hydration is the single most important preventative. This keeps the crystals that form stones flushed out of the kidneys. Also, because the two most common types of stones are caused by oxalates and urine acid, cutting down on the foods high in these acids can help reduce your risk. Some oxalate rich foods are: peanuts, spinach, sweet potatoes and chocolate. If calcium rich foods are consumed at the same time, it helps prevent the oxalates from building up in the kidneys. People who suffer from kidney stones are sometimes prescribed potassium-citrate to help reduce their risk of forming more. You can get similar benefits from drinking lemonade or limeade.
