What is the exact essence of cutting the tail of a dog?

Almost all dogs around my neighborhood have their tails cut short or cut off totally.   What is the reason behind cutting a dog’s tail?

  1. Many people do it because of the breed standard but I personally wish they would outlaw it because if you’re not showing your dog there’s no reason to crop the tail. The tail is an extension of the spine and personally I think they need it and I think they’re much cuter with a tail than without. And I love nothing more than to see my dogs tail wagging when I come home.

  2. Docking a dog’s tail is actually a cruel thing to do, many breeders do it when the puppies are first born. There are only a very few dogs that naturally don’t have a tail such as Welsh Corgis, French Bulldogs, Boston terriers or Brittany Spaniels. Working dogs like hunting or herding breeds often had their tails docked for safety reasons but these days the only reason for docking a tail is only for looks or for the “proper” look of the breed according to the American Kennel Club standards. Unless there is an injury or infection there is no reason to cut off a dog’s tail.
