Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a preventive medication taken by HIV-negative individuals to reduce the risk of contracting HIV. PrEP is highly effective when taken consistently, as it blocks the virus from establishing infection in the body. It is recommended for people at high risk, such as those with an HIV-positive partner or engaging in unprotected sex.
In contrast, HIV medicine, also known as antiretroviral therapy (ART), is prescribed for individuals living with HIV. ART works to suppress the virus, maintain a healthy immune system, and prevent transmission to others. While PrEP is preventive, ART manages an existing HIV infection.
