I really think there should be some type of provisions made for when owners of crypto assets die and no one else knows their passcode.

Anyone you’d like to access your crypto can only access it if you’ve given provisions for that before you die. If you die without provisions to access your asset after death, then nothing happens to your assets. It just continue to lie in your wallet forever. Using a hardware wallet with pin code written on the back put in bag with seed and instructions on how to use it will make it easy to access.
Your lost bitcoins will still hold its value. This means when you die, you’ll still help others to be rich. Other than that, if nobody knows your private keys, yes, they are lost forever until someone finds a way to crack it. I feel this should actually be looked into.
