  1. Rooting a device is the process by which a user gains access to the root permissions of the device, a term stemming from UNIX-based operating systems, in which root access provides unhindered access to any command or file in the system. Having a device that is not rooted means that there are restrictions placed on what files, data, and other system options you can access, usually imposed by the reseller of the phone. These restrictions may include disabling some phone features, not allowing you to remove certain applications, or other restrictions.

  2. Rooting is a term associated with android devices. Rooting basically gives user unlimited permissions to access all the files of a device, right to the core including basic system files. Due to this there can be large amount of mods, tweaks that can be done or even completely installing a new operating system albeit with substantial and very real risk of bricking the phone (dead phone) if not done properly or changing some critical files.
