Grinding of the teeth -medically known as bruxism- at night may have several causes. Stress and anxiety are the two major reason many people grind their teeth. Grinding the teeth can also be a result of an interference in the bite. It maybe because of miss aligned jaws to even a small premature contact of the teeth. It doesn’t take much of a premature contact of just one tooth to promote grinding. Toothaches, infections, jaw pain, and sleep apnea are all issues that can promote grinding.
Teeth grinding is an uncommon habits that is quite common in people but then causes differ from person to person. My girlfriend used to suffer from depression due to a number of horrible things that happened to her growing up and then in adulthood. I believe this contributed greatly to her forming teeth grinding in her sleep as a habit. Since she has been in a relationship with me, the teeth grinding has slowly been reduced. Occasionally when she is stressed due to whatever, she will grind her teeth and it wakes me up. I rub her tummy, back, arm, etc if it does not stop right away. It seems to relax her and she stops grinding. I’ve told her I do this and she thought it was the weirdest thing ever. But she told me to keep doing it if it helps her stop grinding her teeth.
