Many times you can’t know for sure. But certain signs and symptoms may point to the diagnosis: high fevers, cough— especially if it’s associated with mucopurulent sputum, shortness of breath, wheezing or rhonchi, abnormal sounds when breathing, malaise, weakness, diaphoresis. The definitive diagnostic procedure is a chest X-Ray, accompanied of course by a physical exam by a doctor—-in some cases a physician can diagnose a pneumonia without the need of an X-Ray even though they always order it.
Depends on what type of pneumonia. People can go around with walking pneumonia with minimal symptoms until it’s really bad. But general symptoms are tightness in the chest, back pain near the lung area, difficulty breathing, a feeling like you need to cough something up, sometimes chronic coughing , progressing to later symptoms like fever, projectile vomiting.
