Glutamine is used therapeutically in conditions of catabolic stress or malnutrition, especially those that involve damage to the lining of the gut.
Glutamine is a key player in the metabolism of nitrogen. It acts as a nitrogen shuttle to reduce the amount of ammonia in the body. Impacts on blood urea nitrogen and creatinine, even in people who have reduced kidney function, are not considered to be clinically significant. Studies have indicated supplemental glutamine does not benefit athletes who engage in intense exercise for less than 3 hours per day with respect to endurance/performance, exercise recovery or body composition. Supplementing glutamine can interfere with the absorption of other amino acids; reduce the production of endogenous glutamine, and increase production of glutamate and ammonia; impair ammonia transport and detoxification.

It is safe to take. But you really don’t need to take it in additional amounts if you are taking already good amount of proteins in a day. There are various companies trying to sell out their products which we really don’t need it. You should not be take it if you have any liver problem, cancer pateints or any this kind of medical history. Should not be taken above prescribed dosage.
