The best and the safest way is to keep yourself well informed all the time. In Canada, people don’t talk to strangers on the street and keep to themselves. Always carry a working cellphone and make sure where the cops are when attending a concert or have an emergency contact always handy while travelling. Make sure they will be available in time of need. Everyone in Canada is busy because work is worshipped than anything else so everyone ends up at work when you may need them.
Canada is a safe place. Just keep your eyes peeled all the time. Sometimes, some mentally disturbed weirdo will run his truck over innocent pedestrians as happened this summer. Good luck and safe sailing.
There is violent crime in Canada but it does not happen often. If you compare Canada to US, As a new immigrant, you won’t face any violent crimes if you are moving to metropolitans. They are extremely diverse and tolerant. You would be relatively safe there.
In general, new immigrants should be less adventurous to move to counties and small sleeper towns unless they already have an established community there. It will be much easier for a headstart than be lone wolf. You will also be safer.
Crime against immigrants is of overt nature. You will be automatically be placed at the bottom of the society as you will be FOB ( Fresh Of the Boat) unless you have a job transfer before coming there. If you are that badass then no problem. Mind your own business and enjoy your space. The ‘Canadian experience’ badge will shun your resume for every job that you will apply for. There is no way around it. You can call it as a crime against your intellect. In US,which is openly racist but values intellect at all levels.
Your non native accent will never let you become a Canadian citizen in the eyes of a regular Canadian pn the street even if you get a Canadian passport. It will also affect your “cultural fitness” at the time of your job interview unless you are going to work at the IBM back office. That is a crime against how you sound.
