Since private school may not receive public funding, private schools often have a choice about accepting kids on the spectrum. Some specialize in autism and only accept kids with autism diagnoses. An example of such school is Jericho School, established by parents and local business people in Jacksonville, Florida. The Jericho School offers specialized, science-based education opportunities for people with autism and additional developmental disorders. Jericho’s curriculum incorporates Verbal and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to provide students with individualized and comprehensive instruction. This school is well-reviewed by parents who have had autistic children attend. One mother noted the science-based curriculum at Jericho helped her low functioning autistic daughter become a productive and happy adult.

Good learning program depends on the particular needs of the child, and the expectations of the child’s parents. Thus, while any child with autism will do better in a classroom that supports his particular needs and learning style, the best option will depend on your child’s needs. For the early years, the most effective way to train your autistic child is through homeschooling. The best part of homeschooling a child with autism is that you will know he/she is getting what they need when they need it. Educating children with autism at home will give you the flexibility to truly individualize programs that best meets their daily and weekly needs. Some homeschool programs for autism allow you to adjust the curriculum to best suit your specific student’s or child’s learning abilities. We’ve provided information that will hopefully answer many of the beginning questions you may have about homeschool. Using programs that work with a visual spatial learning style, using predictable formats and patterns and incorporating technology while teaching your autistic child or student.
