I’d say that the easiest activity involving language, that I have been involved in would have to be theatre and drama. Not professionally so, but just for fun, especially for kids. When kids get together and think about an idea, on how they perceive it, on how they think others perceive it, how people react to it, how people emote on it, how they talk about it, what tone and language they use, what their body-language is, etc. they get to know a little bit about every aspect in life. Writing a script, assigning roles, accepting roles, writing dialogues and screenplay, actually performing on stage, being an audience and appreciating are extremely joyous ways of building relationships, understanding them better, and learning how to convey thoughts and emotions completely and effectively through the use of English or any other language for that matter.
Even if you write, there should be expression in it. Your writing shouldn’t just be text, it should be a narrative. And I think drama or skits are excellent ways of pouring a child’s heart out into paper and onto a stage via some beautiful episodes of the English language!
If they are absolute beginners, you’re going to be playing games with them, singing songs, learning the alphabet. Teaching these beginners is not something I have much experience with these.
However, once they can read, even a little:
You want to get them reading regularly. For the love of education, promote reading with all your heart. It is such a powerful tool for so much enrichment in our lives, it cannot be over stressed.
