  1. The earliest puppies should be weaned is 6–8 weeks old. They should start to eat solid food, puppy food mixed with warm water to make a grool. That will supplement the mother’s breast milk and give her some relief. Once puppies start to break-in teeth, the Mother dog will try to avoid them because of obvious reasons. Breast milk contains essential antibodies that will help the pups fend off diseases until they get their first vaccinations.

  2. I’ve heard about people weaning puppies and taking them away from their dog mom as early as 5-6 weeks, this is so wrong and too early. Eight (8) weeks is the minimum. Puppies need the time with their littermates and moms to learn how to be dogs. This is the time where they learn things like bite inhibition, etc. They also need the time to fully transition to solid food. A 5week old puppy will still be nursing part time.
