Jungle justice is mostly common in African countries such as Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria and some other ones. It’s the total disregard for the country’s rule of law, mob taking justice into their hands by publicly punishing and humiliating alleged criminals, especially thieves and rapists. You see, most of the times when people take laws into their hands and take it up to themselves to punish criminals, it’s because they’ve lost hope in their nation’s system of justice, so rather than see justice denied, they take it into their hands and melt out punishment. There are not straightforward laws because most of the time, it’s hard to get a hand on any of these perpetrators, that’s why it’s called mob justice.
Jungle or mob justice is indeed a disregard to the rule of law, that is, the law of the land. It is a contravention against the fundamental human rights as provided for in our constitution. It is a sign of weaknesses of a nation’s judicial system, this then empowers the citizens taking laws into their hands. I’ve not made research on whether there are laws against it yet. In 2017, a bill was passed in Nigeria, the bill allows for anyone apprehended taking part in jungle justice at least 25 year’s imprisonment or in extreme cases, life sentence.
