Tommy Shelby is smart enough to come up in society when in that time gypsys didn’t so that. He makes things happen and demands respect from his family, his towns people, and even the law. I also think he outwits a lot of his rivals so he comes out in the good. There is about Tommy an enigmatic, tragic solemnity – and a driving ambition to be calling the shots instead of being ordered to be a tunneler and sneered about his lowly position.
The way he talks, the way he moves and most importantly his authority. The fact that he is a well-known gangster who walks about the streets of Birmingham without being prosecuted for his crimes, makes him different from all the other men in the show. His power and use of words play a big role in getting him to sleep with nearly every female protagonist. Right from the first episode when Tommy makes an appearance on his horse with cigarette in his mouth and people hiding from him, you can tell he’s not like the other men.
