Once an addict will always be an addict but that does not mean they will engage in the same destructive or deceptive behaviours that were likely present in active addiction and the personality of an individual in recovery may look and feel different than when in active addiction. If they were dishonest while in active addiction it does not mean they will be untrustworthy in recovery. Recovery is a lifetime of work but the gifts of recovery start with the chance to actually live a lifetime.
I think it’s true in the sense that most addicts you come across won’t ever touch the thing they were addicted to again. If you truly weren’t addicted to it anymore after being clean, then you could still partake in it without letting it become a problem. So in that way, I guess they’re always an addict. Just an addict who learned to stay away from that thing they were addicted to. So they found a way to stay away from it while still vulnerable.
