I try to observe myself from a detached, objective point of view as my emotions begin to flow. I pay attention to my reactions to my environment and simply watch without attempting to control. Often a moment of clarity will come and I see where the emotions are coming from, the real source, which is often some form of fear. By watching the emotions flow and not resisting or taking action on them they usually pass and calm returns.
Your emotions are your friends and you need to be aware of them as they may literally be essential to your survival. If something seems off, stop and evaluate! Remember that your breath is extremely powerful. Learn breathing exercises that you can exercise when dealing with fear or anger, and you will have a very powerful tool in your arsenal. If you ground yourself fully in the present, the past will have no power over you. You can respond differently and in the best possible way to almost any situation. Your emotions are like wild stallions, powerful and beautiful. We need not be afraid of our own feelings. Tame and respect them.
