My fiancé’s parents do not speak a language I understand anytime we go visit them. They’d rather speak in their local dialect even though they speak and understand English perfectly well. Should I be worried they don’t approve of the relationship?

What does it mean when your fiancé’s parents do not speak a language you understand just so you don’t understand whatever they’re saying? Is that some kind of disapproval?

Hi dear, that’s very bad signal. I mean, if they like you, why have a conversation in a language you clearly don’t understand. When people do that, they are most likely gossiping, that wouldn’t be something you’d like from your fiancé’s parents. This remind so of me when work took me to Paris, I had zero knowledge of French. It was a total disaster, I kept wondering why I was sent to a Paris branch office. As expected, they didn’t like me. First, the language problem. Second, I was just not liked, which was made very obvious the first day I reported there. They comfortably discussed me even when I was seated with them, just because I couldn’t understand their language. If they like you, no matter how love their local dialect, conversing in English when you come around shouldn’t be something that difficult to do provided they can speak English.

I feel you should have the talk with your fiancé. If anything, I think he encouraged it. If you two visit his parents and they speak in their local dialect, he should be able to tell them to switch to English to accommodate you. If he doesn’t speak for you, who will? It doesn’t necessarily mean they disapprove of the relationship, I mean, don’t be too quick to assume if you’ve not talked to your fiancé about it.
