Whatever rights are accorded to women, so too should they be accorded to men. So if maternity leave is mandatory, so too must be paternity leave. Such policy should do much to eliminate the inherent risk of employing women, and should do much to level the playing field between men and women in the workforce. Honestly, I think people who choose work over family should be compensated for it. But as it stands now, men have the opportunity to father children without any substantial interference with their careers, which is unfair because women can never have that opportunity.
Yes. I’m from Finland, and I just returned to work after 3 weeks of paternity leave. I don’t think we would have made it otherwise since the baby was delivered by c-section, so my wife was very weak for a long time after the delivery so I had to do most of the work at first. Men have the right to be with their new born just as the mother does. Being a father of two, I know how tired—and if the baby was delivered by C-section—both the baby and the mother need care for at least 3 weeks. The first days of the baby are very important as well physical contact create bonds with the mother and father the more time you spend with him/her the more a relationship will develop.
