Getting married takes a lot of serious thought, you have to make sure that you really do want to get married, and if there is the slightest chance that you still want to be with anyone else then you are better off staying single. It takes a lot of work in order to maintain a marriage. I have learned exactly how much work it really takes and it’s not a joke, it’s a lot of give and take and 100% on both sides, not everyone is cut out for marriage and if you know that early on you can be spared a lot of grief.
It’s worth having a long conversation about how your families communicated when you were a child. Did they talk over each other or take turns to speak, did they shout and argue or stay calm and quiet, how did they resolve or avoid conflict, did family members express emotion, etc. So much of the way we communicate comes from how our family did, so talking about this as a couple really helps you understand each other. Another thing worth noting and discussing is family budget, it is important for couples to their financial personalities before marriage. Am I a saver? Are you a Spender? These things among many others often get ignored and which later come to hunt marriages.
