I’ll just speak for myself because i think this topic is highly relative, as lousy childhood can mean different things to a lot of people. My own idea of lousy childhood is not having a normal childhood like some other people. Growing up, I had to become an adult at a very early age for the sake of my younger siblings. I practically took care of my siblings as my parents were not so much around to be in the picture. It was such a rough ride to adulthood, but I’m grateful as the lessons learnt early in life helped shape me into a better person.
A person can be said to have a lousy childhood if their childhood wasn’t so great. My current partner had such a very lousy childhood, it affected him as an adult and he’s using better part of his life going to therapies so as to heal. A lousy childhood is such a very rough childhood and the experience or trauma comes back to hunt the child sooner or later when they’re grown.
