IMO, Berkeley is perhaps the best pure sciences university in the US. If I were a youngster interested in pursuing a PhD in physics, the top three on my list would be, in no particular order, University of Chicago, Princeton, and Berkeley. Also, in mathematics, EE, CS etc. Berkeley beats most Ivy League universities. No disrespect meant to Harvard. But when it comes to medicine, law, B-school, etc., I don’t think Berkeley is as prestigious as the top Ivies. Generally, Ivies are much more focused on liberal arts, law, medicine, and business. Harvard’s reputation as the #1 university is based on its medicine, law, and MBA programs.
The University of Berkeley is not an Ivy League school, but is unofficially considered a public Ivy League school due to it’s stellar athletic and academic performance. This doesn’t mean that it is an Ivy League school, but has a reputation comparable to that of one. Officially, it is part of the University of California system.
