My insertion experience wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. It was like a really, really bad period cramp for a few seconds, and then it was over. I felt nauseous for a few minutes, then crampy for a few hours, then I was totally fine. Ibuprofen will be your friend, but it really isn’t that bad for most women. Some have bad experience and even pass out, but that’s a small minority.
I got mine inserted barely 3 months ago, although I’m tough and stoic about pain, but this was hands down the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. I’m naturally very tight, so I’m guessing that made it worse than the average person. I also took 800mg ibuprofen before the procedure and had to take that for several days after. It felt like intense cramping that didn’t come in waves, it just stayed cramped. I got sweaty hot and cold at the same time, felt light headed. My doctor was excellent and the whole thing took less than 60 seconds, but I definitely had to lay there for a while after. I had a lot of cramping and bled for almost a month straight after getting it done. The cramping was so intense I would have to stop what I was doing at times and sit down because it knocked the wind out of me and I got the shakes. My body finally cycled around, and I feel great now.
