The only way to lose a web domain is if you do not pay for it to be renewed before it basically goes back to the pool of available domains. There is no limit to how long you can keep renewing a domain name, the 10years limit is only per renewal, it has nothing whatsoever to do with how many times you can renew it.

You can keep a domain indefinitely if you pay each year and that is exactly what each company or person who owns a domain is doing.
It is not possible to pay for a domain in advance for more than 10 years and that is not necessary, you just pay every year. Sometimes individuals or companies lose their domains because they fail to pay but that is not often, sometimes domains get disabled because they fail to pay. Ten years is the maximum length you can register for, but you can renew every year and increase the expiration date, or renew for 10 more years after the first ten.
