Is it okay to deduct from employee’s salary if they’re late to work?

  • 0

There are employers that deduct from their employees salary whenever they get to work late. Is this a good practice?

Probably wages, you are required to pay them for the time there are there and on the clock, but not salary. Salary is pay for doing a job not for being there at certain times. There is absolutely no reason to deduct the pay of a salary earner just because they were to work, so far they still performed the job functions expected of them. Where i worked during my college years, good behaviour was rewarded. Reward the behavior you want rather than punishing the behavior you don’t want. You’ll encourage that behavior when people see a benefit. Look for ways to incentivize the behavior you want. You’ll be seen as a great boss rather than a grump. If you still don’t get the behavior you want, fire them and get some new people.

There would be legitimate reasons to decrease a person’s salary for various infractions or performance issues, if you are contractually and legally allowed to do it. But if they are continually shortening their work week and subsequently aren’t getting their jobs done effectively, you may want to simply terminate them. Just don’t use it as a way to take advantage of employees who may work shorter hours one week to make up for other weeks with longer hours. You may save a few bucks, but you will lose the confidence of your salaried employees. Those who really put in the time to get the work done will see it as a betrayal.
