To me, when it comes to streaming, readily available content and a wider variety of options then for sure this goes to Netflix. But that’s not to say that HBO sucks, in fact I think they specialize more with high quality original content – so in terms of that factor HBO wins. So I guess it boils down to choosing variety and availability over niche quality content.
Personally, I do have a Netflix subscription. But I also have cheap cable that has HBO anyway so I can just watch it on the television. But definitely my Netflix subscription comes in handy for being able to watch lots of shows and movies anywhere, anytime so I give it edge there.
Realistically, both are excellent. If I had to pick just the one, it would be HBO. I think their content is great – real life stories, gripping drama and shows that really inspire and entertain. Whilst Netflix has many titles from other vendors, they seem to be investing more and more into their own content which isn’t quite on par with those from the likes of HBO or Showtime. I cancelled Netflix for a bit to start streaming with another provider that has many titles from HBO et al, but am considering coming back to Netflix because the user interface and viewing experience is just unrivalled.
