I had to take an unplanned trip, and I didn’t carry my sunscreen. Well, I wouldn’t want to buy a sunscreen I don’t trust except I see the one I’m used to. Can I use castor oil instead?

You need an oil with an SPF factor in – so buy a sun oil. Don’t be fooled by the fact that some natural oils like carrot oil, coconut oil etc are ‘good for tanning’ they will accelerate a tan but give you no protection from UV. UV is the most ageing thing for the skin – so buy a proper one!
There isn’t any essential oil that I know of which acts as a natural sunscreen. I like to add essential oils to my DIY sunscreens for their anti-inflammatory, toning and moisturizing effects, but this is one thing they can’t do. However, I can recommend you a natural oil that does offer SPF protection: coconut oil. It has a SPF of roughly 4, which might not seem like much, but it actually means that it can block approximately 75% of UV radiation. And while that might not be sufficient on your trip, it’s a great option for everyday wear.
