Phrases like “men don’t cry”, “boys don’t cry” have been thrown at the male gender for far too long. And men who cry are seen as “soft” or “emotional”.

It used to be a sign of weakness in a man. It’s complete rubbish and the more men that show up their feelings the more that don’t end up in a doom by themselves with a gun waiting to end it. It’s a stupid stereotype that men don’t or shouldn’t cry, that they will be less of a man or something, its stupid it doesn’t make men weak or any less of a man if they cry. Personally I would rather a man cry than hold it in. This is sad and needs to be talked about and there are many vindictive women out there who have not been abused but use their children as pawns with the father. Consequently the man lives a horrific in hell and turns to the bottle, pills or suicide
The idea that men should not cry is a holdover from cultures in which overt displays of emotion signaled a lack of emotional control which could have been fatal not only to the man but to the family and community he was sworn to protect. Unquestionably, there are dangers to suppressing emotion. But there are dangers to not regulating it too. I would even surmise that the danger stems from the same source, as suppression of emotion is as poor a way to regulate as giving it free reign. Which is a load of hogwash, and dangerous at that, as it urges men to suppress their emotions and not seek help when they need it. Hence the name of Toxic Masculinity: supposedly masculine traits that are in fact dangerous to men.
