Over-salting food is something that definitely must happen once in a while, when it happens, what’s the best way to get rid of the excess salt?

  1. Add more non-salt things. You need to either dilute the salt with more food or flavor the food with something that stands up well to a lot of salt. Also, there is nothing magical about potatoes when it comes to removing excess salt from food. They work by either just diluting the salt or by absorbing some of whatever liquid they’re placed in.

  2. If it’s a soup, you can add a whole peeled potato and then fish it out after 10-15 minutes. Depending on how oversalted, adding pasta or rice as an addition to your dish may also help. If it’s noodles or a noodle dish you can try some lemon juice or vinegar. You could also try something creamy like plain yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream or my personal favorite is cream cheese. You can add cream cheese to a cream or tomato based pasta dish.
