The first thing you should do is to see exactly how much data each application on your computer has been using via the task manager. One of the things you can do is set your connection as metered. This will let laptop know you don’t want large updates and apps automatically download. Also, check your background apps, turn off the ones you’re not currently using, leaving all background apps running eat deep into your data.
From your windows, go to Start>Settings>Network & Internet>Wi-Fi>Manage known Network>Select the network you want to turn off background data usage and then simply turn on Set as Metered Connection. It works fine for me.
