Proofread your friends’ stuff e.g., resumes, college essays, to get your feet wet. Prepare a portfolio to show off your work. Then try landing an editorial job, one that involves polishing prose, at a smaller publication, publishing house or website. As with all jobs these days, having a basic competence across a variety of disciplines will make it easier to get hired. A good understanding of the copyediting process will help your proofreading prospects.
If you are active on social media, you could start there. Posting on your Facebook and Twitter accounts, example, articulately and using correct grammar rules are some evidence that you have an above-par command of the English language. Also, post your original articles on the aforementioned accounts help. It helps you build a history, not just as a person whose written English is good, but, also, as a person who can fashion out enjoyable stories or articles. It goes without saying that writers want their editors and proofreaders to be writers too.
