I think it highly depends on the swimming skills of the person, people who know how to swim very well sure knows that they should not struggle when swept away by water currents. Although, it may take hours, the current will carry the person back to the shore. But it may not be from the shore where they were carried from.
A person swept away by a large wave can actually never survive it. This is a big wave we’re talking bout, bid wave of a large body of water. It is very unlikely for the person to survive, let alone survive after many hours. It is almost impossible.
