The basic difference is that a helicopter generates lift by the movement of part of the device overcoming gravity, while the airplane relies on movement of the entire device through the air. That makes the helicopter more suited to remaining at a location suspended above the ground or traveling across the ground, while the airplane must continue moving in order to stay aloft. The consequent difference is that the airplane can travel across the ground quite a bit faster than the helicopter but cannot hover in one place. This is because when the helicopter moves, each blade of the rotor must generate lift when it is advancing in the direction of the helicopter’s travel as well as retreating from the direction of the helicopter’s travel. So each rotation of a given rotor blade must produce comparable lift both while advancing and retracting, which is achieved by changing the pitch of the blade with each rotation, once increasing it during its retreat from the direction of flight and once decreasing its pitch for the advancing portion of its rotation.

With an airplane the wings are fixed to the body. To make it fly you have to move the entire aircraft through the air. This forces the aircraft to operate out of a rather large and expensive airfield. With a helicopter the wings are fixed to a mast and by spinning the mast you make the wings move through the air creating lift, allowing the body of the aircraft to remain stationary. Helicopters are referred to as rotary wing aircraft. Airplanes are much more efficient, faster, cheaper to build and operate than helicopters, they are also easier to fly. The helicopters saving grace is its ability to hover and to operate out of extremely small and or unimproved spaces. They definitely have their place.
