Simple spider veins can be dealt with cosmetic laser therapy or injection of a sclerosing agent. Both of these are relatively straightforward procedures if done by a professional. Lasers can leave brown patches in place of the veins, while injections can cause skin damage if the product leaks outside of the vein. Either way it’s important to make sure you don’t have a bigger problem with varicose veins that has caused the spider veins due to high pressure in your veins. Superficial/localised treatment in this case won’t last and new veins will recur. To check you need a duplex ultrasound scan of your leg veins before proceding to cosmetic vein therapies
The two most common methods that I use are either laser treatment or sclerotherapy. Generally they are quick treatments – around 30-60 minutes – and involve minimal downtime. Depending on the severity of the venous disease and method used patients may need follow-up treatments. However, for many patients it’s a quick and painless procedure. It is, however, important to note that treatments to not stop spider veins from reoccurring in the future. You should also expect a pre-treatment consultation and ultrasound by an MD to ensure optimal results.
