The best way is to use iTunes. If you have your iPhone backed up either on your Mac or PC this process will be smooth and easy since you won’t lose your unbacked up data.
However, if not then your data will be lost and it may be a challenge in case you have not backed up your data. If you remember your Apple ID and password then I would suggest to go right ahead and erase. I have done the process multiple times than I can count and it never disappoints.
Try several wrong passwords and you will see the lock screen says iPhone unvailable or security lockout, and the Erase iPhone option is at the right bottom. Tap on it and enter your Apple ID password. It will erase all the data including the forgot passcode on your iPhone.
