If you are already a California resident, a smog check is required whenever there is transfer of ownership of a vehicle and every other year after that. The only exception is 1975 and older vehicles, they get a pass.
Almost all vehicles in California are required to pass a Smog Check. This is done every two years for registration renewal. Your DMV Registration Renewal Notice will indicate if your vehicle needs a Smog Check.
