Putting it water-damaged phone in uncooked rice is a phone repair hack that I’ve known all my life but never tried out. Does it really work?

This is just a myth, it doesn’t work. Yes, rice absorbs water and the idea is that if you put your phone in rice, it will pull the water out of the phone. Not possible. There are many nooks and crannies inside the phone that retain water and will eventually corrode the connectors. The best thing to do is get the phone to a phone repair store who offers water treatment programs. They use special chemicals to displace the water and then they scrub the corrosion off the connectors. if you can’t do that, take the screen off the phone and place it next to a fan. If you can unplug the battery, please do. Do not try and charge the phone. That will fry the phone if there’s much water inside.
I ran my phone through the washing machine four months ago. Upon discovery it was not functioning. I placed it in front of a fan for a day and it still wasn’t working. Then into a plastic container full of white rice for two days. Lo and behold it worked and it is still working with no problems. So yes it may rescue your phone. My phone is a Samsung. Rice acts as a desiccant and naturaly absorbs moisture. Keeping the container airtight forces the rice to absorb the only available moisture- in the phone.
