Has anyone ever experienced period syncing?

Before I got a new female roommate, I was entirely on a different period cycle. But with the new roommate, I’ve realized my cycle changed and we have our period at the same time. Is this just my imagination or it’s a thing?

  1. No, women who live or work in a group do not sync up their menstrual cycles. It only appears that way because each woman’s menstrual cycle can vary from the average of 28 days, some cycles are longer, some shorter, some are irregular, etc.so eventually in any group, some women’s cycles will overlap, but then they will drift away from each other again.

  2. It is hormonal and is perhaps an evolutionary advantage. If you are living in a pre-historic tribe, having your periods with all the other ladies means that you don’t miss out on potential mates you will go to other ladies when you are not ‘available’. In any case the human menstrual cycle is tied to the lunar cycle of 29 days, and since the reasons for the tie up are the same for all ladies, it is logical that the periods will sync. Perhaps it is only after invention of artificial lighting and the subsequent disturbance of the diurnal cycle that significant differences in ‘period’ dates happened.
