Well I think it’s true to a certain extent, like for instance on more fundamental stuff like political, philosophical, and religious views I would think so, but not always in terms of the way they treat others or personal tastes. I think people generally need some common ground to be friends, but it doesn’t have to be personality. I have friends who are very different to me in personality but we have something else that connects us like a hobby or interest, and friends where we have nothing in common on the surface but are just similar enough as people that we still get on great.

  2. We can all agree that the phrase is fairly accurate. People tend to flock with those like them or whose beliefs and behaviors are fine with them. Basically, if you hang out with racists, you are either racist or totally okay with associating with racists. Or if you hang out with assholes and you know they are assholes, it can only mean you’re an asshole yourself. At the very least, they are signaling they are perfectly okay with whatever that characteristic is and that it isn’t a deal-breaker for them in that friendship.
