You shouldn’t apply topical treatments to the eyelids without checking with your doctor first. The eyelids are an especially vulnerable area that may not respond well to some topical applications. A doctor may prescribe antifungal gels or pills if they suspect a fungus is causing the dermatitis. Topical steroids may also help, but they’re often used sparingly because they can thin the skin.
The procedure for involves applying pressure to the eyelids to express the glands and squeeze out the oils. Eye specialists use tiny forceps or paddle-like instruments to compress the lower and upper eyelids. There is a standard tool designed to squeeze out the oil from the meibomian glands effectively. The eye doctor places the tool between the eye and the inner eyelid, parallel to the glands. Then, use a finger or a cotton tip to apply pressure in the outer eyelid.
