Parole allows a prisoner to serve the remainder of their jail time in the community instead of doing that in the prison. Only prisoners who have been found to be well behaved are often granted parole. The prisoner is eligible for release on parole to serve the remainder of the sentence in the community subject to conditions and under supervision. If a prisoner is released on parole, they are still undergoing their sentence until it expires, but are doing so in the community rather than in prison. At any time while on parole, they can be returned to prison to continue to serve their sentence if the risk of them remaining in the community is not acceptable or they flaunt the parole rules and regulations.
The duration of a parole probation depends on the kind of offense and the jail term. There are some inmates who gets out before they finish serving their term on the basis of good behavior and conducts. The types of offenses I know that is often involved with long term of probation are; rape, thievery/scam, drug trafficking and the likes. Some can be on parole probation for as long as a year, some, through out the life time outside the prison cos their ways have to be strictly monitored.
