The tongue of a healthy person is pinkish in colour, moves freely and is gently moist with a light coating. If a tongue changes colour or texture, a Chinese herbalist or naturopath may use tongue diagnosis to detect vitamin deficiencies, poor circulation, high cholesterol, allergies or digestive problems.
The presence of tumors, ulcerations due to canker sores, fungal infections, vitamin deficiency, scarlet fever, trauma, precancerous lesions, lichen planus, Kawasaki’s disease, trauma- bacteria overgrow. A deviation of the tongue is indication of a cranial nerve paralysis or possibly a brain tumor. An increased size is seen in Down’s syndrome, congenital hypothyroidism, neurofibromatosis, diseases with accumulation or deposit of mucopolysaccarids, amyloidosis. It may be swollen in severe allergic reactions like angioedema. It may be enlarged in genetic diseases like Beckwith-Wiedermann syndrome. It can enlarged in acromegaly. Also it can indicate the degree of hydration of a person.
