I’ve been placed on periodic mediation by my therapist, it’s supposed to help calm down. I do realize it helps relax my mind. Does it work for you?

When you become intimately acquainted with your mental faculties, you find that there is a place where internal conversation takes place. This space appears to sit on top of the space of awareness. Awareness is not thinking, but awareness is aware of sensations and feelings. The internal conversation creates a person and endows this person with preferences and beliefs.
When we sit in meditation we can watch the conversation until it subsides, or we can replace the conversation with a word or mantra of our own choosing. If you sit for a half hour, you will certainly have moments when the conversation subsides and only silent, pure awareness remains. A dedicated daily practice will eventually allow you to quieten the conversation as needed. I am currently experiencing the conversation much like the breath where there are periods when it subsides, and periods when it dominates.
With increased understanding, you experience that neither the conversation nor the stillness is your absolute essence, and allow them to come and go as they please.
Meditation is one the most effective ways to learn to become an observer of the mind, it also provides the opportunity to deal with thoughts in a very unique way. My unique way of handling thoughts is easy and a person who is new to meditation can learn it right from the very first meditation. When practiced on a daily basis, this ability grows, and can spill over into daily life. So you can be observing and using a simple way to move past the thoughts that often repeat in a very annoying or even disturbing way.
I used to have a head full of self defeating thoughts that were so bad, they left me feeling inadequate and prevented me from stepping out on the path I wanted to go on for my life purpose. Once I began to use the technique, I was able to begin my new life, and I have never looked back. I look inward instead and master those unwanted thoughts! Meditation is just one effective tool, and you can use the tool in everyday life. Being present in each moment, without thinking about other things is another tool to mastering the mind, and this meditation helps you to do that as well
